Dr Karjalainen Elected as ECL President

Dr Sakari Karjalainen, Secretary General of the Cancer Society of Finland, has been elected as the President of the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) at the General Assembly on 12 November 2015 in Belfast. ECL has 25 member associations in 23 countries. Its Secretariat is based in Brussels.

In his new role, Dr Karjalainen will be responsible for leading the pan-European cancer control activities of ECL, whose vision is a Europe free of cancers.

ECL has a strong and active Patient Support Working Group, where members exchange best practices and discuss new developments to improve the lives of cancer patients and survivors. Other activities of ECL include advocating for smoking reduction and effective tobacco policy at the European level, communicating prevention and messages of the European Code against Cancer, and providing the Secretariat for the MEPs against Cancer group of the European Parliament.

ECL and the Cancer Society of Finland collaborate on the EU Joint Action on Cancer Control (Cancon Joint Action), which is co-funded by the European Commission. ECL also receives EU co-funding in the form of an Operating Grant.
