Heikki Joensuu awarded for 30 years of cancer research

The Cancer Foundation Finland awards the Niilo Voipio Prize for Professor Heikki Joensuu. For almost 30 years Joensuu has contributed to the Finnish cancer treatment and research.

Heikki Joensuu is one of the best known cancer researchers internationally. His pioneering research has significantly contributed to improved cancer diagnostics and for example cancer care particularly for breast cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) patients.

Heikki Joensuu combines and utilizes basic and clinical research in the development of the oncology. His scientific interest is aimed at wide spectrum of cancers which is also shown in his varied list of publications. He worked as an Academy Professor between 2010 – 2014.

The Niilo Voipio Prize amounts to €5 000. The Prize will be awarded at the Finnish Cancer Institute Symposium held on 16 of June in Jyväskylä. The Symposium is simultaneously one of the 80th anniversary events of the Cancer Society of Finland.

Niilo Voipio Prize

The Cancer Foundation awards the Niilo Voipio Prize in recognition of scientific cancer research. The prize amounts to €5 000. Niilo Voipio was Secretary General of the Finnish Cancer Society from 1949−1986.

The Niilo Voipio Prize has been awarded four times in the 2000s: to Academy Professor Kari Alitalo (2013), Professor Jukka-Pekka Mecklin (2009), Professor Matti Hakama (2006) and Professor Albert de la Chapelle (2003).
